  5. *** Standard Installation ***
  6.  
  7. Follow this easy one-time installation procedure:
  8.  
  9. 1) Create a directory to hold the Space Hound related files.  The
  10. recommended directory name (used in the following instructions) is
  11. "C:\Spacehnd".
  12.  
  13. 2) Copy all Space Hound-related files to this directory.  At a minimum
  14. you need the following files:  
  15. SPACEHND.EXE
  16. HOUND1.DLL
  17. HOUND2.DLL
  18. HOUND3.DLL
  19. SPACEHND.HLP
  20.  
  21. 3) Note:  You will also need a copy of VBRUN300.DLL.  This file is
  22. available within many CompuServe forums. To obtain this file from
  23. CompuServe, GO WUGNET and search for the file VBRUN3.ZIP.
  24.  
  25. 4) You may optionally copy the following files to C:\Spacehnd:
  26.    APIGUIDE.DLL
  27.    MHRUN400.DLL
  28.    CMDIALOG.VBX   
  29.    MHGCMD.VBX
  30.    MHTR200.VBX
  31.    MHVIEW.VBX
  32.    MUSCLE.VBX
  33.    THREED.VBX
  34.    SSDATA2.VBX
  35.    SSIDXTAB.VBX
  36.  
  37. Note:  It is possible that you may have existing copies of these files
  38. within your WINDOWS or WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory or within other directories
  39. on your system.  These files are used by many different applications both
  40. from shareware and commercial companies.  The proper location for these
  41. files is within the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.  Caution, before you copy
  42. these files to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, you should use the Windows
  43. File Manager to see if copies of these files already exist.  
  44.  
  45. If these files are not present within the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, you
  46. may simply copy them into it and proceed to step 5. 
  47.  
  48. If versions of any of the files are already on your computer, you should
  49. use the Windows File Manager to look at each file's date & time to determine
  50. if the existing version is newer than the files included within the 
  51. SPACEHND.ZIP file.  If your existing files are newer, Space Hound should
  52. work just fine with them and you can proceed to step 5.
  53.  
  54. If the Space Hound files are newer, you should move your original files
  55. to a temporary directory in case you encounter problems with other
  56. software and need to get them back.  
  57.  
  58. Once you have moved the older files to a temporary location, you may
  59. copy the Space Hound supplied versions to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
  60. Note:  Once Space Hound is installed and running, you can use it's ability
  61. to peek inside files and view the file's version information.  This will 
  62. generally confirm which one is the older version.
  63.  
  64. 4) Use the Windows Program Manager to place Space Hound within an
  65. existing program group or create a new group and then add the program
  66. to it.  Refer to your Windows' documentation on adding new programs
  67. and groups.  
  68.  
  69. NOTE: Fineware is aware that the install process is complicated and we
  70. would like to help.  In general, shareware downloads need to be as small
  71. as possible to reduce connect time charges.  If you are not comfortable
  72. with the installation process described above, you may contact us and
  73. for a small postage and handling charge ($2), we will send you a complete
  74. setup and installation package.  This will still be the unregistered
  75. version of Space Hound but it will contain everything you need to
  76. properly and easily install the program.

  78. That's all there is to installing Space Hound.  When Space Hound is
  79. activated for the first time, a few one-time only dialog boxes and
  80. messages are displayed.
  81.  
  82. Remember that while Space Hound is active, online help is always
  83. available by pressing the F1 key.
  84.  
  85. Common installation problems:  
  86. Many of today's applications include components from other 3rd party
  87. distributors.  These components are like snap-together parts.
  88. When an application is initially designed, the programmer
  89. is probably using the latest version of all of the components his
  90. application needs.  Over time, these components may be enhansed to
  91. include new features and capabilities.  A frequent problem occurs when
  92. a newer application makes use of features that were not available
  93. in earlier version of the software.  This can cause problems when
  94. multiple versions of these components exist on your computer. 
  95. Please refer to the following list of files and eliminate older
  96. version if possible.

  109. Other Common Problems:
  110.  
  111. SYMPTOM:  Attempts to run any of the reports or displays cancels the
  112. program all the way to the DOS prompt.
  113. CURE:  Your autoexec.bat file contains a line for the CD-ROM driver called
  114. MSCDEX.  This line ( or a preceeding line) may contain a parameter which
  115. is causing the problem.  Check for /S on the MSCDEX line.  If it is there,
  116. remove it.  It's only function is to allow multiple PCs to share a CD-ROM
  117. drive over a Windows for Workgroups network.  If the /S appears in the
  118. preceeding line, try re-arranging the order of the lines in autoexec.bat 
  119. so that this line doesn't directly preceed the MSCDEX line.
  120.  
  121. SYMPTOM:  A GPFault occurs when you launch the program.  Normally, this
  122. will be the result of a conflict with some aspect of Space Hound and
  123. your video card.  The module that reports the fault will have a file
  124. extension of .DRV and most likely, you will be using a driver with more
  125. than 256 colors.
  126. CURE:  Make sure that you are using the latest driver.  Contact your video 
  127. card manufacturer.  If this does not fix it, try adjusting the number of
  128. colors used up or down as well as adjusting the resolution. If this still
  129. does not correct the problem, use the standard VGA drivers which ship
  130. with Windows.  One option you might wish to try is to add the following
  131. lines to the SPACEHND.INI file which is located within the application's
  132. directory.

  140. These settings disable the toolbar and status bar.  Both of the screen
  141. elements contain graphic images and they could be the source of your
  142. screen driver problems.
  143.  
  144. SYMPTOM:  Attempts to print cause a GPFault or subsequent errors are
  145. see in standard Windows components.  An example is getting a Divide by Zero
  146. error when you attempt to launch Windows WRITE.
  147. CURE:  You are probably using a PostScript printer driver or other 3rd
  148. party print spooler.  The only work around is to use the miscellaneous
  149. options and set the Printer ByPass option under the Miscellaneous tab.
  150. Should this error occur, the method to restore your system to normal
  151. functionality is to remove your current printer driver (via the Windows
  152. Control Panel) and Re-install it.
